Executive Director of UN Women, Michelle Bachelet, Calls for Greater Equality and Inclusion of Women in the Public Sphere During International Human Rights Day
To mark the occasion of Human Rights Day, executive director of UN Women, Michelle Bachelet, has made a call upon world leaders to repeal discriminatory laws and policies, align national laws with international human rights treaties and “take affirmative action by enhancing temporary special measures such as quotas” in order to advance the equal rights and equal participation of women in the public sphere. “The voices of too many women and girls continue to be stifled through discrimination threats and violence. This is holding back progress for women and for all members of society,” said Bachelet. She recalled that women’s participation is essential for the achievement of sustainable development, peace and democracy and made a call for more women leaders in the public and private spheres.
