Vital Voices teamed up with The Daily Beast and Tina Brown for an incredible three-day summit: Hillary Clinton introduced Julie Taymor's production of SEVEN; Meryl Streep anchored all-star cast
Vital Voices was thrilled to partner with Tina Brown, editor-in-chief of The Daily Beast for the first-ever Women in the World: Stories & Solutions summit on March 12 at the Hudson Theatre in New York.
The summit convened the biggest names in business, entertainment, media, government and civil society for discussions on some of the most challenging issues facing women around the world, including poverty, trafficking and rape as a weapon of war.
Secretary of State Clinton, founder of Vital Voices, introduced a special performance of SEVEN, a documentary play written by Paula Cizmar, Catherine Filloux, Gail Kriegel, Carol K. Mack, Ruth Margraff, Anna Deavere Smith and Susan Yankowitz:
"Let’s decide what each of us can do to make sure that we stand on the side of those who are pushing forward the boundaries of human freedom, human rights, who are expanding the circle of opportunity to include women and girls."
Meryl Streep performed the role of Irish activist Inez McCormack as part of an ensemble reading of the play that tells the courageous stories of women from seven countries: Afghanistan, Cambodia, Guatemala, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, and Russia. Julie Taymor, acclaimed director and creator of the Broadway musical The Lion King, directed the one-night reading.
